The Way Station continues to support the future of music and the local music scene by offering monthly residencies to musicians and curators. For musicians, these residencies provide both a steady gig to refine their chops and an opportunity to build up a fan base. For curators like Paul Ryan, who hosts a singer songwriter night on first Mondays, and Shannon Brown, who shines a spotlight on local country music during the third Friday Gotham Holler night, it provides a home to stretch the musical boundaries of a genre. In addition to being a music venue, The Way Station also serves as a community headquarters giving voice to our neighbors by hosting two monthly lectures. Let’s Talk About Cities on second Tuesdays is hosted by independent magazine Satellite, which focuses on cities, culture, and politics, each month, four people from different fields give short, informal talks about various facets of urban life. Art Talks Brooklyn, on Fourth Mondays, is a new speaker series highlighting the Brooklyn art scene and a great opportunity to network. Monthly, we invite three speakers from different art initiatives; each allotted 15 minutes, to share what they are up to and how their programming positively impacts our community.

This fall, The Way Station has selected seven of our favorite bands and musicians to share what new music is to them. On First Saturdays, stylings range from Stanley John Mitchell and His Band of Buddies’ original material inspired by the American Roots music to Kagero’s blend of Japanese Gypsy Rock, think Gogol Bordello meets David Bowie. On second Saturdays, we host the ultimate groove party by Cookie Cutta and The Crisps. Fourth Saturdays, we continue with cult favorite Comic Tales of Tragic Heartbreak. The band is aptly named as their music is a humorous take on the human condition as led by charismatic front man Robert Whaley.

On various monthly dates through out the fall, house favorite The Jacks of Kings County perform as a four piece with angelic vocal harmonies and tight Americana arrangements. Eric Vitoff, a master of effect pedals and guitar looping, is our Midnight Special playing four solo gigs in September and October. Rounding out the year is The Sometime Boys featuring succinct songwriting blending bluegrass, country, folk, gospel and zydeco into a unique, refreshing Americana sound.

In addition to our residencies, The Way Station serves up live music six nights a week with three to four bands a night, this averages out to more than 100 local, national and international acts per month. Proprietor Andy Heidel doesn’t believe in a cover charge; this mini music venue passes the hat to support the musicians so you can experience the music risk free. All shows are $5 suggested donation.
