Volunteers showed appreciation for the great outdoors right here in Brooklyn at It’s My Park Day at Shore Road Park on Saturday, October 20.
The Shore Road Parks Conservancy encouraged volunteers to come to any one of five locations to maintain and beautify the park. Groups from a number of organizations pitched in, including Cornerstone Church at Bay Ridge, Crossroads Church, First Church of the Brethren, Bad Ass Academy, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Baseball Team and the Moroccan American House Association, who all participated at 97th Street.
Volunteers got to work weeding, planting, sweeping and picking up trash. June Marcus, the site leader, stated, “Our purpose is to maintain and protect Bay Ridge parklands.”
Co-site leader Nathan Tubbs, the pastor of Cornerstone Church, was eager to continue the services he and his volunteers from Alabama had started. “This whole area was overgrown,” he said, referring to the length of park that was previously covered with foliage, which impeded the vista of the bay. “We cleaned it up, and we will continue to clean it up.”
Many people came out to be of service to a neighborhood park they love. Volunteers Anthony Esposito and Jose Cordero from Bad Ass Academy shared that they came just to help out at the park where they run their boot camp. “We do this for the community, to help people so they could feel good and play with their kids,” Cordero said.
Sarah, a student at Fort Hamilton High School, felt it was “definitely important” to help out at the park she visits often. “Shore Road is one of the most beautiful streets in Bay Ridge,” she said. “It’s fun to come volunteer with friends.”
