At 3:04 p.m., the bell rings and Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s lower school students rush to get their belongings and head to the gymnasium to begin training. There waiting in the gymnasium are Andreas Touros and his staff from NY Kosmos FC, a soccer organization based out of Astoria, Queens.

For the next hour and a half, the students go through a series of drills and exercises focusing on footwork, agility and skill development. The four-week program, cleverly titled Future Stars Soccer, is part of Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s After School Enrichment Program.

“Each month we have a different athletic organization come into the school and run a mini-camp for our students to introduce them to different sports. The hope is that they find a sport that they love and have a passion for.” said Director of Academy Athletics James Pristouris.

The initial session began with Touros and his staff demonstrating drills without soccer balls. The emphasis was on learning the proper footwork to execute the drills. Once the footwork was mastered, the children were better prepared to complete the drills. By the end of the program, students with no prior soccer experience were dribbling through cones and shooting accurately into mini-nets.

“It was amazing to see how much progress was made in such a short period of time. The first day I tried a scrimmage, we had 20 children all running after the ball and on our last day they were spreading out and looking to pass to one another. I really enjoyed working with the Adelphi students.” said Touros, a former professional soccer player in Cyprus.

President and Head of School at Adelphi Dr. Roy Blash and Assistant Head Iphigenia Romanos were thrilled with the program and the positive impact it has had on the students both inside and outside the classroom.

“The program has been great for our students. It helps them build confidence, leadership skills and teamwork, all qualities that are beneficial in our everyday lives,” said Blash.

Next up for the Panthers in training is Little Dribblers basketball which will be coordinated and run by Pristouris and his Varsity Basketball Team.
